The Historic Anthony Theatre is a 1936 Art-Deco Theatre with a stage and was built as the first “refrigerated air” space in the Anthony, Kansas area. It was designed by architect S.S. Voigt. It is a two-story building with white concrete, buff brick, and copper brown tiles. The front marquee features Art-Deco lettering, gorgeous colors, and bright lights synonymous with any theatre. The theatre seats 500, and it opened on November 23, 1936 with “Love on the Run”, featuring Joan Crawford and Clark Gable.
This theatre was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 18, 1991 as building #91000464.
In 2009, the Anthony Theatre was closed and renovation began, restoring the historic building to its former glory. Since that time, the theatre has had a new roof installed, an exterior wall has been reconstructed, and a geothermal heating and cooling system was installed to upgrade the facility. The mechanical and electrical systems have been updated, in addition to new audio-visual equipment for showing movies, and lighting and sound equipment for live events.. The Carthalite front facade was fully restored, and the front marquee is currently being repaired and repainted.
Since 2017, the Theatre has been open to the public, hosting movies, community theatre, and live music events. The Historic Anthony Theatre board is honored to preserve this building for the community’s enjoyment and pride!
